if your kids are 8 or younger (and older ones rarely get read good night stories), i might recommend the book '35th of May' by Erich Kastner, a wonderful slightly anrachic childrens book classic (written in 1932). It has an unemployed rollerskating horse in it, that should be sign of quality enough...
